Chapter Four

Rafe

As I wait in the hallway with a cup of coffee until the doctor has cleared Jules, I wonder if I’ve gone crazy. Why did I think it would be a good idea to drop by and visit her? The girl probably thinks I’m a creep or a stalker or something. I’m half tempted to walk away, but then I think of her smile and sparkling eyes. She must like me. No one could fake a reaction like that.

If my brothers at the station or the Chief knew about me being here, they’d drag me away and force me to check myself. We’re supposed to fight fires, not get entangled with the people we save, especially not romantically. I shake my head, laughing at my thoughts. Maybe I should get myself checked out. I’m not thinking straight.

“Something funny?”

I whip my head around and find Jules standing in the hallway, ready to go home. Fuck, she looks good. Her long hair cascades down her shoulders and over her breasts. When she smiles, there’s a dimple in her full cheeks. She’s so beautiful that the sight of her sends an arrow straight to my dick. All I can do is picture the two of us naked in a bed together, me pleasuring her until she cries out my name.

She bites her upper lip and stuffs her hands into the pockets of her jeans. “Do you want to get out of here or...?”

“Of course. Sorry, I was, um... thinking about work. Let’s go.” I chuck the remainder of my coffee in a nearby trashcan and walk her to the elevator.

She frowns when we arrive at the underground parking lot and stop next to my car.

“This one is yours?”

“Yeah. Not your style? Don’t like trucks or something?”

I can tell she’s trying hard to suppress a smile. “It’s silly, but when you said you brought your truck, I thought you meant firetruck.”

I grin. “It’s not silly. It’s cute.”

She gets in the car, and I close the door for her before getting behind the wheel.

“I’m a bit disappointed. I’ve never been in a firetruck. Well, on a field trip, sure, but I’ve never hitched a ride in one.”

“I guess I’ll have to take you with me one day.”

There’s that twinkle in her eye again. “I’d love that.”

I put the car in reverse and back out of the tight parking spot.

“Don’t you need my address?” Jules asks.

“Um, I know where you live.”

She frowns. “You do?”

“I was there last night and remember the address.”

“Oh, that makes sense. Sorry.”

“Are you okay, Jules? We can still turn back if you want to.”

“I’m great. Why?”

“Nothing. It’s just that your cheeks are turning red, and you seem to have a mild form of amnesia,” I tease her.

Her eyes bore into mine. “It’s you.”

“Me?”

“You have this effect on me that turns my mind into scrambled eggs.”

“I’m sorry,” I say.

She shrugs, the dimple in her cheek deepening. “That’s okay. I love scrambled eggs.”

“Same, especially after a long shift.”

Jules angles her body towards me. “Did you always know you wanted to be a firefighter?”

I nod.
